| Once
a tenacious fighter, the English Bulldog is now a loveable and
admired house pet despite their intimidating stature. The English
Bulldog is obviously a stocky breed with characteristically broad
shoulders and short muzzle with a wide head to match and come in
various colors along with a short smooth coat. |
|
| It
is believed that the Bull Dog was orginally bred in England as a
cross between the Mastiff and the Pug sometime in the 1600's. Bull
dogs were used for bull baiting. A popular gambling sport of the
17th century; where a trained Bull Dog would leap at a bull
tethered to a post and the dog would latch onto the bull's snout
in an attempt to suffocate it. However, this was banned by the
UK's Cruelty To Animals Act of 1835. |
|
| The
Bulldog today is a loveable house pet and are very loyal to their
masters and is the popular mascot of many schools and universities
as well as the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps.
