It is believed that the
Shih-Tzu breed originated in Tibet. During the Manchu Dynasty
of the 17th century the were kept in the Temples and held in
high esteem by the Chinese emperors. It was then that they
were named ''little temple dogs'' and were highly cared for
and closely guarded. |

|
The name Shih-Tzu is both
singular and plural. The breed is often cross bred with other
breeds such as the Yorkshire Terrier ( Shorkie) , the Maltese
(Malshi) and the Pomeranian (Pom Shih). |
|
|
Shih-Tzus are generally
small, compact and sturdy in appearance with a highly
luxurious coat, upright head with an easy and carefree step.
Shih-Tzus usually measure from 8 - 11 inches with an ideal
weight of 9 - 16 pounds. They have a round and broad head,
wide between the eyes, an undershot jaw and the incisors of
the lower over lap the upper. |

Shih-Tzus are well known
to have an extremely friendly personality and temprament which
makes them fun loving, loveable and excellent for children.
They are happiest around a group of people and are socially
applicable. |

The Shih-Tzu's coat is
highly regal in characteristic and requires much care and
attention which comes in a wide array of colors and comes in a
thick curly tone to a rich long hair show length down to the
ground. |
